Stuti on acharyas and azwars - part 2
This one is also on Ramanuja!
By whom, Kali
looked like Kruta yuga as he transformed a lot of people in to his bhakti
movement. By whose birth, Keshava (the Lord as well as Ramanuja's father -
Keshava somayaji) accomplished their objective. Indeed a cloud that rains water
called bhakti, I salute that best of ascetics by name, Ramanuja.
कलिः कृतकृतो
येन कृतकृत्योऽपि केशवः ।
भक्त्येकतोयदं
नूनं वन्देऽहं यतिपुंगवम् ।। 11 ।।
कलिः kaliyuga कृतकृतः
made krutayuga येन by whom कृतकृत्यः accomplisher of task अपि also केशवः Keshava भक्त्येक
of only bhakti तोयदं cloud नूनं
indeed वन्देऽहं I salute यतिपुंगवम्
that best of ascetics.

On Ramanuja!
SriRangarajan
shines in a gopura amidst the seven walls. Likewise Ramanuja (Yatiraja) shines
in Yatirajasaptati, a work consisting of 70 odd verses, composed by Sri Vedanta
Desikan. Each decad is a wall and thus there are seven walls in the work as
well.
राजते यतिराजो
वै सदा श्रीरंगराजवत् ।
तस्यां तत्कृतसप्तत्यां सप्तप्राकारगोपुरे
।।
12 ।।
राजते shines यतिराजः
Ramanuja सदा always श्रीरंगराजवत्
like Sri Rangaraja तस्यां in that तत्कृत
done for him सप्तत्यां Yatirajasaptati सप्तप्राकार amidst seven walls
गोपुरे
in a gopuram
Ramanuja always
shines in that saptati (sloka of 70 odd verses) composed in his honour just
like how Sri Rangaraja shines in a gopura amidst seven walls (Srirangam)!

Ramanuja was born in the pingala varsha, mesha (chitrai) maasa and
arudra (thiruvadirai) nakshatram.
An attempt is made to give those details in an interesting manner.
Arudra -
thiruvadirai...its actual name is aardra in Sanskrit (no u in-between) if is
taken as arudra, it looks like coming from the verbal root, rud - to cry. since
he was born in that star, arudra became Suprita (happy)
Mesha means a
lamb. That is chitrai. It roared like a lion due to his birth. Pingala means
reddish brown.......it became mangala ie auspicious...
आर्द्रा भूता
तु सुप्रीता मेषोऽगर्जच्च सिंहवत् ।
पिंगलो मंगलोऽभूच्च यस्य
जन्या भजे हि तम् ।। 13 ।।
I salute him
(Ramanuja), by whose birth aardra nakshatram became pleased (and stopped
crying), the month mesha (sheep) roared like a lion out of pride, and the year
pingala became mangala (auspicious).

तारं श्रीभाष्यकर्तारं मत्पारम्पर्यपं
पराम्।
आर्यमाचार्यवर्यं
तं यतिराजं भजे गतिम् ।। 14 ।।
तारं the star, pupil of the eye श्रीभाष्यकर्तारं author of Sribhashya मत्पारम्पर्यपं the protector of our sampradaya पराम् highest आर्यम्
Noble आचार्यवर्यं best of Acharyas
तं
him यतिराजं Yatiraja भजे salute गतिम्
means
I salute him, Yatiraja, our star, the author of Sribhashya, the
protector of our sampradaya, noble, respected Acharya, the best means (for
liberation)..

This one draws a comparison between
Bharata and Madhurakavi. Bharata resorted to the Paduka (sandals of Rama) as
Rama refused to come back to Ayodhya and thus his holy feet were not available
for worship.
Tradition
has it that Madhurakavi resorted to Nammalvar (Sri sathari or the holy sandals
of Lord Vishnu) preferring them over Krishna (or his feet)! even as Krishna was
much closer to Madhurakavi in time period. (he was also born in Dwapara Yuga)
असतोः पादयोः कोऽपि त्रेतायां पादुकां ययौ ।
स एव किं पुनर्भूत्वा सतोश्चाप्यपरे कविः ।।
15 ।।

- Madhurakavi
In
treta yuga someone (Bharata) attained the Paduka as the holy feet (of Rama)
were not available. Was he born again as the kavi (Madhurakavi) and attained
the Paduka even when the holy feet (of Krishna) were available?

This sloka, on
Goda (Andal) and Gopala (Krishna) was composed some two years before. Now I
present it here as I was reminded of it by my good friend Shankar, a
Krishnabhakta, through his comments for the previous one.
गोदा ददातु
मे गाश्च तत्पतिः पालयेच्च ताः ।
ताभ्यः क्षीरात्
घृतेनैव तद्दम्पती तु तुष्यताम् ।। 16 ।।
गोदा the giver of cows
/ words (the power of articulation); ददातु let (her) give; मे to me; गाः cows /
words; च
and;
तत्पतिः
her
husband Gopala Krishna; पालयेच्च rear or nourish; ताः them; ताभ्यः from those cows / speech; क्षीरात् from
milk or poetry; घृतेनैव
with
the butter or bhava or rasa; तद्दम्पती that couple; तु indeed;
तुष्यताम्
rejoice.
Two
meanings - one with cows and other with speech.
Let
Goda bless me with speech, let her husband nourish it, from the rasa born out
of good poetry let them both enjoy the rasas! 🙏 The
third pada could also be तज्जातनवनीतेन.

Mukundamaalaa
- a bhakti filled composition of Sri Kulashekara (identified with Kulashekara
azwar). One should read it and understand its import - an epitome of bhakti
bhava.
The
below verse is about it, compared to a maalaa (garland or japa maalaa) with
play on words!
अमूल्यमालां
हृदि धारणीयां करे तु हार्यां च जपस्य मालाम् ।
सकृष्णतृष्णामसकृच्च
चिन्त्यां मुकुन्दमालां शिरसा भजेऽहम् ।। 17 ।।
An invaluable
maalaa, should be worn in the chest / heart), be carried in the hand (the book)
like a japa maalaa. It, revealing the Krishna trishna (thirst for attaining
Krishna), should be meditated many times. I salute that Mukundamala with my
head bowed down!

In
Samskrta, when the word 'ratna' is added to another word and used to indicate a
person or work, it means that the person or work is the best in that group.
Ex-
kanyaratnam, stotra-ratnam etc.
This sloka is on
stotra-ratna, a splendid work by Yamunacharya, also known as Alavandar! One
should make an attempt to taste the bhakti rasa overflowing from it at least
once! What will be the result? A poem like this may be born! 😊
स्तोत्रं यदेकमात्रं
वै स्वादनेन न जायते ।
स्तोकमन्येषु
यत्नं तत् स्तोत्ररत्नमहं भजे ।। 18 ।।
I salute
that stotraratna after reading or enjoying which even for once, a little effort
(even) does not arise to read other works!

Composed for Sri
Alavandaar's thirunakshatram
प्रामाण्यमागमस्यापि पुरुषस्य च निर्णयम् ।
आत्मेशसंविदां सिद्धिं गीतार्थं संग्रहेण च ।। 19 ।।
चतुश्श्लोकी श्रियश्चापि स्तोत्ररत्नं ततान यः ।
सम्प्रदायस्य रक्षायै तं वन्दे यामुनं गुरुम् ।। 20 ।।
Just listing all
his works in two verses. His works are आगमप्रामाण्यम्, पुरुषनिर्णयः,
आत्मसिद्धिः, ईश्वरसिद्धिः, संवित् सिद्धिः,
गीतार्थसंग्रहः, चतुश्श्लोकी, स्तोत्ररत्नम्.
I salute that Yamunacharya who wrote composed the above works to protect the
sampradaya.🙏
