Random musings - part 6
I may be prejudiced in
stating this. People who are endowed with jnana are those who always revel in
their own self (not the body), by themselves. Whereas people who are endowed
with a beautiful form revel in looking at their own person (in the mirror) and
also in others' looking at them, in vain!
आत्मदृष्टिपरास्तुष्टाः स्वयं हि ज्ञानिनस्सदा ।
परदृष्टिपराश्चापि मोहिता रूपिणो वृथा।। 51 ।।

This verse compares and
contrasts the two avatars - Parashurama and Srirama. Parashurama was a
brahmarishi but with anger he destroyed the pride of kshatriyas. Rama was a
kshatriya but with composure he won over the pride of Parashurama.
सम्भूय रोषरामश्च क्षत्रदर्पं जघान वै ।
शान्तरामः पुनर्भूत्वा ब्रह्मदर्पमहो हरिः ।। 52 ।।
Hari, became Rosharama
(Parashurama, a Brahmin) and destroyed the pride of kshatriyas. But again he
became Shantarama (Srirama, a kshatriya) and won over the pride of Brahmarishi.

Where is peace? Wherever
there is an established road, walked by many people, it can be taken for
granted that IT will not be there! Wherever she is, she has to be searched for.
She normally lies at the end of the road less travelled! Caves of the mountains
or of our hearts have to be explored!
यत्र यत्र भवेच्छान्तिः प्रायः पन्था अनिर्मितः ।
हृदो गिरेर्गुहा वापि मार्गितव्या महात्मना ।। 53 ।।

------------------------------------
Wherever peace is, mostly
the place is inaccessible. Strong willed persons have to explore the caves of
either mountains or their own hearts! This one belongs to a genre that conveys
two meanings. One superficial and really not intended the other technical and
really intended. This apparently takes a dig at men. The FCPs may smile and the
MCPs may shrug!
In Sanskrit, most of the
good things are found expressed in feminine gender. This is the crux!
स्मृतिर्भाषा कृतिश्चापि स्त्रियामहो न विस्मयः ।
सर्वा भावाश्च तस्यां वै पुंसामस्ति किमप्यहो ।। 54 ।।
Samanya meaning:
Thought, speech and
action of men are about women. That is not surprising. All their emotions revolve
around women. Is there anything else for men to do?
Special meaning based on
Vyakarana (Grammar) - the words smrti (memory), bhasha (language) and krti
(effort) are in feminine (gender). That is not surprising. All bhavas are also
expressed in feminine gender. Alas what is there in masculine gender?

In our play with time, it
pushes us some times and only because of that push (pressure) some things are
done by us! But there are sometimes when we have to push time for it seems to
stand still at some moments of life. Despite pushing it does not take a step!
प्रचोदयसि मां काल! लक्ष्यं यामि कदाप्यहो ।
प्रचोदयामि यदाहं पदमेकं न यासि तु ।। 55 ।।
प्रचोदयसि you push मां me
काल! Time लक्ष्यं target यामि I attain कदाप्यहो sometimes alas प्रचोदयामि push यदाहं when I पदमेकं single step even न यासि तु you do not take
Time! You push me
sometimes and I reach my target as well but when I push, you don't seem to take
(even) one step (forward)!
Better version - Meaning
same!
प्रचोदयसि मां काल! लक्ष्यं यामि कदाप्यहो ।
पदमेकं न यासि त्वं प्रचोदयामि यद्यहम् ।।

Let there be many doshas
in me. I do not bother about them and they do not bother me as well! But there
is only one dosha - jaladosha - a real tormenter - again and again!
वर्तन्ते बहवो दोषाः बाधन्ते नैव ते सदा।
एकोस्ति ஜலதோषो वै बाधते मां पुनः पुनः ।। 56 ।।
Since I could not find
the word जलदोषः in
Sanskrit dictionaries, I assume it is a Tamil word and hence used it as such
making the sloka (anushtup) manipravala...Just for fun....

Disclaimer: this is not
for those who have not at all begun their studies in Sanskrit! Well! that I am
not a scholar in Sanskrit would have been evident by now. But it is okay.
Words are of different
types in Sanskrit and they are derived differently from the verbal roots called
dhatus. Grammar is basically deconstruction and ensuring correctness of
formation. When the names are already established and are in usage, what more
is needed for poets!?
The word Rama is
technically a 'krdanta' derivation and janaki is a 'taddhita' derivation. So,
what to me as a poet, the words alone enough for poetry and derivations are not
needed! Just for fun, not to demean Vyakarana shastra!
रामो भवेत् कृदन्तस्तु जानकी चापि तद्धितम् ।
व्याकरणेन किं तेन नामालं कवनाय मे ।। 57 ।।

Usually rivers flow from
the land to the Sea. Is it not? But the perennial rivers called aadhi-s (mental
afflictions) and vyadhi-s (physical afflictions) seem to flow from the ocean
called samsara in to the land called the bodies of the Jivas! How strange!
संसारसागरादेव जीवशरीरभूमिषु ।
आधयो व्याधयो नाम हन्त वहन्ति सिन्धवः ।। 58 ।।
संसारसागरादेव from the ocean called samsara जीवशरीरभूमिषु land called bodies of the
jivatmas आधयो mental
afflictions व्याधयो bodily
afflictions नाम called हन्त alas वहन्ति flow सिन्धवः rivers
Alas! From the ocean
called samsara flow the rivers called aadhis and vyadhis in to the land of
Sarira of jivas.

When a plant blooms, it
appears lovely with the fragrance born out of that (vasana)! But when the
vasanas (impressions) begin to bloom in a man, he fades due to that!
पुष्पैस्तु वासना जाता शोभते पादपस्तदा ।
म्लायति मानवस्तस्य पुष्प्यन्ति वासना यदा ।। 59 ।।
पुष्पैस्तु from flowers वासना fragrance जाता

Maybe it's my experience.
What is Sushupti (deep sleep)? It is that state which, leaving the whole night,
approaches a man afresh, whenever, wherever!
सुषुप्तिर्नाम सावस्था निशां विहाय याति या ।
यदा कदापि कुत्रापि मानवं च नवं नवम् ।। 60 ।।
सुषुप्तिर्नाम Sushupti is सावस्था that state निशां the night विहाय leaving याति attains या who / which यदा कदापि whenever कुत्रापि
wherever
मानवं a man नवं नवं
afresh
Ofcourse this is true
in present days. The more we spent the nights in useless activities - eating
late, watching TV, WhatsApp etc etc, we disturb the sleep schedule and the
system shuts down temporarily when it goes beyond control during the day!
