Random musings - part 3


Usually samsara is compared to an ocean due to its unfathomable nature. In this I compare it to the sky, which is unlimited. What am I? A bird. Well a bird flies with its two wings. Two wings are attaining happiness and avoiding sadness!

पक्षाभ्यां सुखदुःखाभ्यां खगोऽगतिरहो हरे! ।

अहं संसारखेऽखण्डे सदा डये वृथा रमे ।। 21 ।।

Hari! Without a recourse and with the two pakshas namely Sukha (to attain) and duhkha (avoid) I am a bird always flying in the sky that is samsara in vain!

This is on motherhood! Nothing can match that in God's creation! The background is an aged mother looks at her son, who is carrying a weight, not heavy for his age, yet she tells him - 'unnaala mudiyaathu kondaa naan thookaren' 'you cannot, give it to me I shall'! Cha! Enna jeevan antha Thai enbaval!! 🙏

दृष्ट्वा तु भारं लघुरूपिणं तं

    वृद्धापि माता तनयं नयन्तम् ।

शक्तो न मे देहि वदत्यहो वै

    तस्यै जनन्यै हि नमो नमो मे ।। 22 ।।

Seeing a light weight being carried by her son, a mother, though aged, tells him thus, 'you cannot! Give it to me' Alas! my salutations again and again to that mother (motherhood)!

Some of us might have heard puzzles like - a man confronted with two questions simultaneously but he has to give only one answer - how did you get hurt and where are you going? செங்கல்பட்டு ! Lol

This sloka is an attempt but with one question and two answers!

Someone, referring to two sounds, asks a single question to a young girl; what is the sound? She replies Saveri and Kaveri. The sounds made by a river and a person singing a raaga.

The word kaveri gets repeated but not with same meaning and so is the sound 'rita'.

नादद्वयं ननूद्दिश्य पृष्टा कापि च बालिका ।

कावेरितेति कावेरी सावेरीति तयेरिता ।। 23 ।।

Anvaya of the third pada and fourth pada is like this - का वा ईरिता इति - कावेरी 

सावेरि इति तया ईरिता । Those who know Sanskrit may appreciate better!

This morning I was quite struggling to locate chillies in a chilly plant! Astonishingly the chillis and the leaves were of almost same green colour! It was like the plant trying to hide them! But the flowers were of different colour and perhaps they were being displayed openly!

असमानैश्च वर्णैस्तु दर्शयसि सुमानि वै ।

गोपयसि समानैस्तेऽपक्वफलानि पादप! ।। 24 ।।

Hey plant! With a different colour you proudly display your flowers but you hide the unripened fruits with almost the same colour (as that of your leaves)! Is it because you want to serve them when they are ripe?!

In this sloka I tell Hari that I am also a panchayudhapani!


कर्माख्यचक्री दुरिताख्यशड़्खी

    विख्यातसंसारगदी च सोऽहम् ।

आशेषुयुक्तान्तरशार्ड़्गधन्वा

    मोहाख्यखड्गी ननु मामवेहि ।। 25 ।।

Addressed to Hari! My Lord! I also hold a cakra called karma, hold a shankha (a hundred billions) of durita (sins), hold a gada called the famous samsara, a sharnga called antara (mind) that has asha (desire) as its ishu (arrows), hold a khadga (sword) called moha (illusion) that cuts my jnana if any! Know me to be thus! A panchayudhapaani!

Lord Varadaraja, also called Devaraja (Pitambara) of Kanchi was born from a sacrifice (sapta tantu) performed by Brahma (Vidhi)! In this He followed the usual rules (vidhi) of the world! I.e a cloth (ambaram) is born from tantu (thread)!

अनतिलड़्घ्य लोकस्य देवराजस्स वै विधिम् ।

सप्ततन्तोर्विधेः काञ्च्यां जातः पीताम्बरः पुरा ।। 26 ।।

O the peacock! How beautifully it sings and dances and enjoys on its own by looking at the dark cloud! (कृष्णतोयदं) Hey peacock! Please teach me that! Here the peacock indirectly refers to the Acharyas who revelled in any sort of association of the thought about Paramatma! (कृष्णं तोयदं) They must have sung and danced in bliss! O Acharya! Please teach me that!

रमसे कथमेकाकी दृष्ट्वा कृष्णं च तोयदम् ।

नृत्यसि केकया तन्मां मयूर! त्वं हि बोधय ।। 27 ।।

The role of bees in nature is very significant! Very silently and focused do they go about doing their duty of identifying nectar and collecting it at one place for the benefit of others! So are the Acharyas! The comparison is not new at all, the presentation might be!

अभ्रमभ्रमरास्सन्ति मधुमात्रपरास्सदा ।

चिन्वन्त्येकत्र तन्वन्ति परेभ्यश्च मुदां बुधाः ।। 28 ।।

The Acharyas are like bees that are focussed on nectar alone without any confusion. They collect and spread the nectar and thus joy as well for others!

This is word play!

The letter jna ज्ञ means a knowledgeable person. The word prAjnaH प्राज्ञः means a knowledgeable person of the highest order! In the sloka I am addressing Hari and telling him that both He and I are प्राज्ञः. How? The letter , also called as अकार, means the Brahman as well! So, I am addressing Him as अकार as well and tell him that when the word प्राज्ञः indicates me it should be split as प्र + अज्ञः. अज्ञः means ignorant! Ignorant of the highest order!

अकार! त्वमसि प्राज्ञः तथाऽहं च हरे! यथा ।

मत्परे तु ज्ञकारोऽस्ति त्वत्पूर्वस्सर्वदा किल! ।। 29 ।।

अहं प्रकर्षेण अज्ञः ।

Sorrow, called as duhkha, is tough to experience. Alas! it (the word) is tough to pronounce as well! Happiness, called as Sukha, is easy to experience but slightly difficult to pronounce - so what? How does it matter!

अनुभवेऽपि काठिण्यम् उच्चारणेऽपि दुःख! ते ।


आद्ये सुख! न किञ्चित्ते परे भवेत्तु तेन किम् ।। 30 ।।
