श्रीमद्रामायणस्तुतिः - भागः २


In the Ramayana, there are somethings which can be sportively questioned! Lord Rama was still holding on to the Ring though he left everything behind when he left for the forest. Sita devi bundled all her ornaments and threw them down except the choodamani (may be with a reason?!) Let that beautiful couple who left everything behind (mutually each other even for the welfare of others) except the choodamani and ring for mutual memories, protect me always!

सर्वं त्यक्तं पुरा याभ्यां न चूडामणिकड़्कणे ।

परस्परमभिज्ञार्थं पातां तौ रामदम्पती ।। 11 ।।

This one alludes to an episode in an indirect way!

Someone who was Kubera's enemy, born in the lineage of Brahma, leader of the enemies of Devas, was conducting himself in an intolerable way! He was exceedingly hit by the arrows of a son first and then by his father, at his will, and was killed! Ravana, was first hit by the arrows of manmatha, and then by the arrows of Rama! (Later manmatha was born as Pradyumna to Vasudeva Krishna)!


कुबेरवैरी विधिवंशजातः सुरारिनाथस्स चचार कामम् ।

जहार पुत्रः प्रथमं शरैस्तम् अनन्तरं तज्जनको ममार ।। 12 ।।

I hail Ravana! I feel i am more indebted to the Asuras than the Devas as only the former have been instrumental in making the Paramatma descend to the martya loka and ultimately to the paataala loka (my mind) as well! So, I salute Ravana in this sloka, only because of whom Vishnu became Rama!

कुबेरवैरी विधिवंशजातः कुजातकामेन ययौ च मृत्युम् ।

तथापि वन्दे तमहं यतो हि पुरा स विष्णुं नु चकार रामम् ।। 13 ।।

This one like the previous one is in upendra-vajra metre. The first pada is same in both!

मथितमानसा माता रुष्टपुत्रेण धीमता ।

निन्दिता यमिना तेन त्यक्तराज्येन सर्वथा ।। 14 ।।

This would form part of my future work on Ramayana. The mother (Kaikeyi) whose mind was churned (for worse) was castigated by him, the wise, the angry son (Bharata), the restraint, one who had renounced the kingdom by all means. The word यमिना can also be read as अयमिना with sandhi and thus would mean 'by the unrestraint' in castigating his mother. The idea has to be refined in to good padya later when I perhaps acquire more skill in future!

Valmiki became manmatha! By holding in his hand (the book) a sugarcane that had seven stems (seven chapters), which was filled with Rama rasa, Valmiki shone like manmatha who would generate love for Rama...

सप्तकाण्डेक्षुकं हस्ते ऐक्ष्वाकरसपूरितम् ।

धृत्वा बभौ स वाल्मीकिः रामस्य कामदायकः ।। 15 ।।

For time being it is presented as a अपक्व-इक्षु ! Manmatha has a sugarcane in his hand - so goes his description - by having a sugarcane called Srimad Ramayana in his hand, Valmiki shone like Manmatha because he generated love (for Rama).

पुनरपि भवतात् स स्पर्श इत्येव मत्वा कपिवरकरगामी सोंगुलीयो बभूव ।

जलनिधितटकांक्षी सन्निधिं प्राप तस्याः सुखवनसुमुखायाः दिव्यचूडामणिं च ।। 16 ।।

Context Sundarakhanda - metre : Malini 

Rama's hand-ring meets Sita's Crestjewel. Rama must have embraced Sita daily by placing his right hand upon Sita's head during which the ring must have touched the crest jewel daily.

When Hanuman went to Lanka, the ring, thinking that 'let that contact with crest jewel happen again', went for the hand of Hanuman. Eagerly looking for the other shore of the ocean it attained the sannidhi of that beautiful lady in ashoka vana and her crest jewel also.

रामोपदेशवाग्बाणः तताप स्वमनो यदा ।

पपात भरतस्तस्य पादावश्रु ववर्ष ह ।। 17 ।।

In Srimad Valmiki Ramayana, when Bharata learnt about the developments in Ayodhya in his absence, rushed to meet Rama. Rama began to advise Bharata on the intricacies of kshatriya dharma while ruling a kingdom. Bharata who never got coronated could not tolerate Rama’s upadesha and wept.

When Rama’s advice-arrows afflicted the mind of Bharata, he fell at the feet of Rama even as tears rolled down his cheek. (this would form part of my work on Srimad Ramayana, to be done later)

प्रविष्टपावका सीता पूता भूता त्वयाSनघ! ।

अद्यापि लोकदृष्ट्या तु तप्तयशा हि राघव! ।। 18 ।।

Till today kuppan, suppan et al are discussing in pattimandrams whether Rama was right in asking Sita to prove her chastity by entering into fire.

What do I have to say?

O the sinless (Rama!) by you, Sita got purified (or proved her purity) by entering the fire. But till date your fame has been burnt by that very fire in the eyes of people. What would the world be saying today had Rama simply accepted Sita? Perhaps would be doubting Sita!

कपिना प्राप्य सख्यं यः कपिकुलपतेः किल

कपिभिः प्राप्तकान्तस्तं कपिकुलपतिं भजे ।। 19 ।।

The word 'kapi' (monkey, Sun) has been deployed to indicate Hanuman,Sugriva, the other monkeys and Lord Rama in that order.

कपिना (through Hanuman) प्राप्य having attained ख्यं (friendship) यः who कपिकुलपतेः (of the king of monkeys, Sugriva) किल (indeed)। कपिभिः (with the help of monkeys) प्राप्तकान्तं (one who got his wife back) तं (him)कपिकुलपतिं (Rama, the King of Solar dynasty) भजे (I Salute)।।

I salute that King of Solar dynasty who got his wife back with the help of monkeys after attaining the friendship of the Lord of monkeys through a monkey.

This one is on Hanuman who stands in silence in front of Rama with his mouth covered with his right palm (you have to visualize the idol in temples). Hanuman is a master of nine grammatical treatises of Samskrta, which means he will not utter an apasabda (incorrect word)

नवव्याकरणानां तु पण्डिते त्वयि तिष्ठति ।

मौने रामसमीपे वै स्तुवे तं मुग्धसाहसम् ।। 20 ।।

Even when you, a scholar of nine grammatical treatises, are standing in silence in the presence of Rama, I am singing in praise of him, (indeed a) fool's temerity!

1. Daring to sing in your scholarly presence.

2. Even when you yourself are standing in silence wondering how he can be praised, I, a fool, dare to sing in praise!
