An anthology of witty poems – part 2

Listening begins only when talking and the urge to talk ends! It is true that two ears are given and they are always open (no doors). Alas! yet their work is impaired indeed by mouth, which has two doors (lips)!

दत्तं कर्णद्वयं सत्यं स्फुटमपि सदा भवेत् ।

वारितं हन्त तत्कार्यं द्वारिणा वदनेन वै ।। 1 ।।

As a (poor) teacher I realise this now! Pitying my own poor teachers during student days!

-------------------------------

It is said only the munis and rishis have exact pronunciation skills. Others have to be content with the extent of capability of their vocal chord! What about me? I utter the vowels indistinctly and consonants in an unpleasant manner. Even then I (dare to) speak your fame, Brahman, Lord (or Lord of syllables)! protect me (from any misgivings)! Though not endowed with clear diction, I dare to do it!

स्वरो मेऽव्यञ्जितश्चापि व्यञ्जनं स्वरशून्यवत् ।

कीर्तिं तथापि भाषे ते मामक्षर प्रभो रक्ष ।।  2 ।।

The usage of word vyanjita for svara and the latter for the former may be appreciated! Also kshara and raksha!

-------------------------------

Dogs are found to be more aggressive (showing more hatred) with fellow dogs than other beings. This is the same with people; they are more critical with people of the same class than with people of other classes or categories. For example a musician has more hatred towards a fellow musician than towards others.

भषति शुनको यावत् दृष्ट्वा तु शुनकान्तरम् ।

तावन्नेतरभूतान्नु वर्ग्ये द्विषन्ति जन्तवः ।। 3 ।।

Need not be true always but yes sometimes!!

-------------------------------

बुद्धिमन्तस्तु मूर्खेभ्यः वरास्तस्मिन्न संशयः ।

केचिद्भवन्ति तेष्वेव मूर्खतमा नु विस्मयः ।। 4 ।।

The intelligent are better than the fools - no doubt - but what is surprising is that a few among them turn out to be the best of fools! Dedicated to all those (pseudo) intellectualls of the world, especially India, more particularly Tamilnadu!

-------------------------------

कश्चिच्छब्दो ध्वनिर्नाम कश्चिदर्थोथवा भवेत् ।

स्फुरत्यात्मनि यत्तत्तु बहिरायाति चात्मना ।। 5 ।।

Let dhwani be a word or some meaning (I don't know) whatever appears in the mind comes out on its own (in padya form)... That's all I know. When people ask me about dhwani etc....

-------------------------------

This is a feeble attempt in a genre of sanskrit poetry where in some words when joined or split give different meaning.

वदन्त्यां दयितायां तु हा स आगच्छतीह चेत् ।

कः क इति स चापृच्छत् हा स इत्येव साsवदत् ।। 6 ।।

When his beloved said 'alas if he comes here now' he asked (in anxiety) 'who who' then she said the same thing 'alas he'!

Well the second pAda has to be read like this...

वदन्त्यां दयितायां तु हास आगच्छतीह चेत् ।

कः क इति स चापृच्छत् हास इत्येव साsवदत् ।।

When his beloved said 'if laughter comes now' he asked (in anxiety) 'who who' then she said the same thing 'if laughter comes now'! Well let me try and come up with more meaningful ones in this genre....

-------------------------------

हरामि पादविन्यासैः असून् केषाञ्चन त्वहो ।

तथैव पदविन्यासैः पठितृणामहो बत ।। 7 ।।

Alas! By placing my footsteps I kill many insects. Alas! By placing words (in slokas) I am taking the prana of the readers!
Asu = prana!

-------------------------------

केवलं नानुभूतौ ते त्वन्नामोच्चारणेsपि मे ।

असुखं हन्त हे दुःख! मौनमेव वरं त्वयि ।। 8 ।।

Alas! दुःख! not only while experiencing you, but also while saying your name, I experience pain! It is better to maintain silence with you! Always I find it difficult to pronounce दुःखम् ।

-------------------------------

This is to take a dig on those mike-dear people....

वर्तेत लघुसन्दर्भः वक्तुकामः प्रवर्तते ।

कृतं मुहूर्तपर्यन्तं कृतज्ञतानिवेदनम् ।। 9 ।।

Even if there is a small window of opportunity, a person fond of mike (speaking) will persist...Vote of thanks is extended for a muhurta (by him).

-------------------------------

कलहो विदुषां पङ्क्तौ मत्पूर्वं स पुरस्कृतः ।

तदेव हन्त भिक्षूणां तेनाहं च तिरस्कृतः ।। 10 ।।

Be it an assembly of scholars or beggars, there is bound to be quarrel; reason being in the former 'he was honored before I was' and in the latter ' I was pushed out by him or he stood before me'.

-------------------------------

Thanks to Apte (as ever) have come out with the following mainly for prasa (alliteration)

द्विरददरदात् सिंहः दर्दरदरमागमत् ।

दारदारणभीत्या यो दरिद्रो दरमाययौ ।। 11 ।।

Fearing an elephant, a distressed lion which reached the cave of a mountain, ran for the valley fearing his wife who would tear him apart! (who was waiting for him).

-------------------------------

पश्येम हा कविर्वैषः तत्पद्यं श्रुणुयाम वै ।

प्रत्युक्तः सदसा श्रुत्वा महाकविरयं किल ।। 12 ।।

Let us see if this fellow is a (कविः) poet, let us listen to him (said the assembly) after listening he was told by the assembly 'indeed he is a (महाकविः) great poet... The word महाकविः is hidden in the first pada.
